University of Texas-Pan American

The University of Texas-Pan American (UT-Pan Am) is the 10th largest university in the state and fifth largest in the UT System. It ranks second in the nation awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics, and fifth in master’s degrees. During the Fall 2005 semester enrollment increased to over 17,000 students and continues to increase each year. UTPA offers 56 bachelor degree programs, 46 masters, 2 doctoral programs and one cooperative doctoral pharmacy program with UT Austin. Additionally, master’s degrees in mechanical, manufacturing and electrical engineering are also offered. The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education ranks UTPA second in the nation in its selection of the 100 best U.S. colleges for Hispanics. As enrollment continues to increase every year so does the campus itself. UTPA is getting its first new dormitory in three decades. The $12.5 million residence hall will allow 400 more students to live on campus by the fall.

Tech Prep of the Rio Grande Valley

Giving students a jump-start at a career, the Tech Prep programs offer a first-rate alternative to traditional college-prep programs for students. They are a partnership between education and business that prepares young people for today’s skilled workforce. This partnership involves high schools, colleges and universities, large and small businesses, and governmental agencies – all working together! All three Mission school districts are active participants in the Tech Prep’s programs. They rely on the business/education connection to design job-specific curricula to prepare students for occupations currently in demand.

South Texas College

South Texas College (STC) is a comprehensive college offering 90 different associate degrees and certificates. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Bachelor of Applied Technology, the Associate of Arts, the Associate of Sciences and the Associate of Applied Sciences Degrees and Certificates. STC is also approved for veteran’s educational training in Certificate and Associate of Applied Sciences Degree programs by the Texas Education. Enrollment in the Spring 2006 reached a peak of more than 17,000 students, as compared to 1,000 students when it was founded in 1993. There are five STC campuses and centers throughout the Valley, including the Dr. Ramiro R. Casso Nursing and Allied Health Center in McAllen, and the Technology Center in south McAllen near the Foreign Trade Zone. Dual enrollment programs are offered in school districts throughout Hidalgo and Starr counties. The programs allow eligible high school students to take college courses while attending high school. In the Fall 2006, STC will begin a Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy (DEEA) program for high school students in Weslaco and McAllen. All academic courses are transferable to colleges and universities and the curriculum includes distance learning, weekend courses and a newly added mini-mester. South Texas College is responsive to the needs of the business community. All new programs are designed, developed and implemented based on workforce needs identified through labor market research.

The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB)

The University of Texas at Brownsville has been a member of The University of Texas System since 1991. In cooperation with Texas Southmost College, The University serves more than 12,000 students at its campus located in Brownsville, Texas. In Partnership with Texas Southmost College, UTB offers Certificates, and Associate, Baccalaureate, and Graduate degrees in liberal arts, the sciences, and professional programs designed to meet student demand as well as regional, national, and international needs. Texas State Technical College

Texas State Technical College Harlingen offers students more than 30 study areas in engineering, computer information, industrial-manufacturing, health care and general education. South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High)

Med High was opened in 1984 and offers a nationally recognized academic program focusing on various careers in the health care industry.. After completing a rigorous core curriculum, students gains hands-on clinical experience in area hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies as well as doctor, dentist and veterinary offices. Students can earn certifications as pharmacy technicians, nursing assistants and dental x-ray licensure.

Partnerships with Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas-Pan American, Regional Academic Health Center and Valley Baptist Medical Center.
