Free Trade Commerce Center at Los Indios
Just 10 minutes from the heart of San Benito, the NAFTA Free Trade Commerce Center is strategically located adjacent to the Free Trade International Bridge, a Foreign Trade Zone and 750 available acres suitable for all types of development. The Global economy is an everyday reality in the border regions. In the past several years, international trade, stimulated by both NAFTA and the Mexican maquiladora program, has boosted the local economy. Since NAFTA was enacted in 1994, US trade with both Mexico and Canada has increased by almost 80 %. The proposed I-69 transportation corridor will connect the Free Trade Bridge to major economic centers throughout the U.S., making San Benito the ideal centralized locale for international commerce.
San Benito is perfectly positioned to emphasize the creation of high technology jobs in order to sustain its economic growth in the future. A strong labor pool, available land and our proximity to Mexico and the International Free Trade Bridge make San Benito, Texas, a very attractive location for manufacturing, distribution and retail opportunities.
Maquiladoras
Maquiladoras are Mexican assembly plants that manufacture finished goods for export to the United States. The industry grew rapidly after NAFTA and the sharp economic boom of the late 1990s. It has stimulated rapid population migration to the border regions, especially the Matamoros/Brownsville area, which is 18 miles from San Benito. Approximately 418,000 people live in Matamoros and its immediate surrounding areas. The city is experiencing impressive growth at 15% annually. There are some 1,127 maquiladoras in the area.
